Mahathir raising cash for Gaza

LARNACA (Cyprus) - MALAYSIA'S former prime minister says he will help raise 500,000 euro (more than S$1,016) in his country to help international activists seeking to challenge Israel's naval blockade of Gaza.

Mahathir Mohamad says the money will be used to buy a small cargo vessel and passenger boat.

He met Thursday with members of the Free Gaza activist group, which is planning another trip to the Palestinian territory when it acquires the vessels.

Free Gaza has made five successful trips from Cyprus to Gaza since 2008.

Israel's navy seized the group's boat last month on another trip to Gaza and deported 21 passengers including former US congresswoman Cynthia McKinney and Nobel peace prize laureate Mairead Corrigan Maguire. -- AP
