SIBU, April 26 (Bernama) -- Sibu SUPP (Sarawak United People's Party) branch chief Datuk Sri Wong Soon Koh is optimistic of a big win by the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate in the Sibu by-election on May 16.

"We are very confident the BN victory in the Hulu Selangor by-election will be repeated over here, albeit with an even more convincing majority," he told reporters after inspecting the Sibu/Tanjung Manis Road Upgrading Work project Package B costing RM24 million here Monday.

Now nine per cent completed since February this year, it is expected to completed in December and be part of the Sibu/Tanjung Manis Road costing RM530 million.

"We have drawn up a very extensive campaigning programme to cover all Chinese (urban and rural), Iban, Malay and Melanau areas in the constituency.

"So far, in the places we have visited, the feeling on the ground for the proposed BN candidate Robert Lau Hui Yew or commonly known as the Robert Lau junior, is very encouraging," noted Wong.

He said the people wanted the proposed candidate to continue the work of the late five-term incumbent, Datuk Robert Lau Hoi Chew.

Wong said the Sibu BN Development Team which comprised elected state and federal representatives and senior government officers could do very well with Robert Lau junior to chart the town's further growth, progress and prosperity.

He said another reason why the people should vote for the BN candidate was because of the state regional development corridor or SCORE (Sarawak Renewal Energy Corridor).

"SCORE will generate a lot of activities which in turn, will generate tremendous amount of job and business opportunities," added Wong.
