Let's Show The Spirit Of Barisan Nasional in Hulu Selangor!

Here is a good article written by Ti Lian Ker, ADUN MCA Teruntum...

MIC WIN IS A VICTORY FOR ALL BARISAN NASIONAL'S COMPONENT PARTIES!!!

Discipline the BN...

Barisan Nasional used to hold the people in awe. This is the party whereby everything is "Boleh". The omnipresence of the Chairman who is also the nation's Prime Minister has always been held in high esteem. This is particularly so during the good autocratic times of the great Tun Dr. Mahathir Mohamed....

But the times they are a changing now...BN had lost a lot of its steam and is seen to be disintegrating. The pillars are collapsing and there is a feeling of deja vu among the opposition unseen or unheard of prior to this.

The disintegration of the BN's structure are also seen in the component parties of BN. Many leaders and leaders wannabe are seen to be on a 'one up' ego trip of their own without regard to the larger picture or interest of BN. Many have also predicted the end of Be End!

It is time to instill some discipline among BN members and leaders whereby open confrontation and conflicts among component parties must be discouraged to ensure the continue relevance and cohesiveness of BN parties.

The leadership of our new premier DS Najib Razak has been challenged by many quarters. We can see that there are many forces at play and some of these forces have openly disregarded conventions, customs and practices of the BN this far.

A recent issue in hand is the Hulu Selangor by election. The sudden demise of Hulu Selangor MP Dr. Zainal Abidin Ahmad had brought about an open lobbying for the seat between Umno and MIC. Some Umno leaders are seen to be having an agenda of their own without regard for the fact that in principle the seat is an MIC seat.

Various arguments have been thrown in to grab the seat from its rightful owner. There is a sudden disregard on the spirit and sanctity of the political covenant and understanding between the component parties of the BN.

Arguments along racial lines were thrown such as this :

The constituency is dominated by the Malays, who make up nearly 54 per cent of over 63,000 registered electors followed by the Chinese (26.7 per cent) and the Indians (19 per cent).

It was argued that the BN seat allocations along quota will jeopardize BN's chances of winning. If racial composition is the yardstick for allocation of seats, the Chinese, Indians and others will end up unrepresented or under represented.

The delineation exercise over the years have seen a trend of racial gerry meandering whereby the Malays were given a bigger voice then their actual numbers. Concentration and distribution of voters to benefit a particular race had been consciously done.

Thus any argument along racial lines is against the spirit of consensus building practiced by BN all this while. The BN racial quotas were introduced to ensure that all races are proportionately and fairly represented. Any attempt to challenge or deprive component parties of their rightful seats is against the spirit of BN and the trust built traditionally over the years. BN and Umno in particular cannot be seen to be fair weather friends...

It had been argued that PKR will be putting up a Malay candidate since the constituency is largely dominated by Malays. It has also been said that the previous MIC candidate was defeated by 198 as a result of Umno's protest votes and as such there is no guarantee that there will be no protest votes this time around.

The above arguments are rather flimsy as it is also applicable the other way round. If MCA or MIC members were to protest against an Umno candidate, there is no guarantee that the supposedly Umno candidate may lose by a bigger majority than 198.

Thus in the spirit of 1BN, any lost by Umno, Mca or Mic is a lost by BN. We cannot afford to split hairs now. Umno must understand why Mca/Mic/Gerakan had lost badly in the last GE. Is it a case of neglect or the interest of component parties being overlooked by Big Brother?

It is this very argument along racial lines that will reduce the minorities representation in the political mainstream in time. We have seen the marginalization of Non-Malays in student bodies as well as sports organization as a result of multi-racial 'camouflage' whereas the colored sentiment and voting along racial lines continue to prevail.

The advocates of multi-racialism are not being truthful when they claim that we are above racial politics. Whether it is PKR, PAS or DAP....racial politics will remain and stay for awhile!

Thus the political consensus and the quota system practiced by Umno, Mca, Mic is still relevant as our political market is still trapped along racial lines. This political quota will actually protect and ensure that the minorities are fairly represented in a colored political mind trapped over the years by political education and exposure that has been very much along racial lines.

The attempt to erase race base politics were merely strategies and reactions adopted by all parties to lure votes in an intensely fought battle for power between PKR, PAS and Umno whereby the votes of the Chinese and Indians are still significant and matters now.

However don't kid yourself into believing that the present political equation will remain and the empowerment of the Chinese/Indian votes at this juncture will remain...

In a multi-racial democratic system blinded and colored by race, it will always be the rule of the majority with little regard for the minorities...thus the quota system has been introduced and must remain to protect the political interest of the minorities!

Bernama reported that for BN's victory, Selangor BN deputy chairman Noh Omar when in Batang Kali recently put it succinctly: "In any struggle, there should only be one voice, so whoever chosen by BN must be unanimously supported".

However I must retort " For there to be one voice, there must not be a breach of duty or trust...."
